FABRIC ON PRESS: COLLABORATIVE PUBLICATION
Five week collaborative process with four other group members. Each person created a 16 page signature highlighting their process and explorations throughout the weeks. Everything came together to an edition of seven hand coptic stitched publications.
PHASE 1 — CONCEPTUALIZING
The class was split into groups and tasked with the open-ended prompt of creating a collaborative project. My group had the common interests of fashion design and print design, so we went down the route of exploring the materiality of fabric. We decided to structure our project around creation without a defined end. Rather, we would each create 10 squares of content every week—whether it be something born digital or physical—then trade with one another and add to each others creations until we had something new. After multiple weeks of this process, we decided to each hone in on what interested us most and come together to create one collaborative publication.
PHASE 2 — EXPLORATION
I took my time to experiment with fabric and wood type on the letterpress. The impact of different textures on printmaking piqued my interest. I was interested in starting my design exploration in the physical world, then pulling it to the digital realm for the publication design process.
PHASE 3 — PUBLICATION
Documentation of my portion of the publication. I coptic stitched the binding for the final piece.
